If a traveling huckster came to town selling an elixir that supposedly could raise the dead, would you be tempted to bring back departed loved ones? Or would you want nothing to do with something like that, whether it worked or not?. That’s what the citizens of the fictional late-Victorian California town Port Promise have to decide in “Elixir of Life,” Idiot String’s new free show in the parks hitting outdoor locations in Oakland, Port Costa, San Francisco, Pleasanton, Berkeley, San Mateo, Santa Clara and Alameda.

“America’s Got Talent” season 5 contestant Jackie Evancho will perform Feb. 10. Audience members might remember her as the 10-year-old girl who astonished shows judges with her soprano voice. Evancho will perform just a few days shy of her 17 birthday. Since her appearance on the NBC show, she has produced four classical music albums and done some acting and modeling work.
