Goode’s dance-theater can require far more than movement, with dancers sometimes reciting text, singing songs, taking on dramatic roles and otherwise stretching their performance skills, which is “one reason why so many people are in the company for so long,” says Marit Brook-Kothlow, who joined the JGPG in 1990. “To Joe’s credit, he chooses people who really want to approach the work in a curious way. You can’t be too precious. People are willing to allow him to work with their ideas, to shape and edit them. Participating in so many aspects of the work keeps us involved. I’m not just mimicking steps I’m being fed. I’m creating works in my own voice.”.
