From left, Yujin Kim, Adji Cissoko, Jeffrey Van Sciver and Michael Montgomery perform in Alonzo King s Sand. (Chris Hardy/Alonzo King LINES Ballet). There is always a sense keen anticipation when renowned Bay Area choreographer Alonzo King debuts a new work, and why not? King boasts a distinctive style that melds heart and science, an insanely talented corps of dancers in his LINES Ballet company, and a knack for expanding his vision by collaborating with top-flight musicians and artists. The choreographer unveiled his latest work Sand April 21 at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. It s a propulsive, yearning work set to a mesmerizing score by jazz icons Charles Lloyd, the groundbreaking saxophone virtuoso, and pianist Jason Moran, who has frequently lent his talents to multimedia and theatrical works and collaborated with King on the choreographer s 2009 work Refraction. Lloyd and Moran performed the score live on Thursday, but did not appear on stage until during the standing ovation after the performance. While Sand might not be King s finest work, it is a stunning and at times powerful piece and a wonderful spectacle to behold throughout. LINES Ballet performs Sand on a program with King s 2014 work Shostakovich through April 30. Lloyd and Moran will perform their score live through April 23, although most of this weekend s performances are sold out.Tickets are $20-$70; 415-978-2787, www.ybca.org.A full review on the program will post on www.mercurynews.com/entertainment on April 25.
