The Violin Concerto was written in 1939, and in 1940, Hindemith came to the United States, where he taught at Yale and influenced many young composers. His musical style is based on use of all 12 tones, but not in the serial fashion of Schoenberg and Berg. Instead, he ranked intervals in terms of consonance to dissonance, in a sort of measured tonality. Some scholars have compared him to Brahms in concept, but with a different sonority. Beethoven’s “Coriolan” Overture was written in 1807 for a play about the same semi-legendary figure from Roman history as Shakespeare’s ”Coriolanus.” The two contrasting themes reflect the resolve of a military leader and the pleadings of his mother to refrain from invading Rome. Beethoven’s example taught many subsequent composers how to emphasize a drama with themes that amplify emotions. What would today’s movies be without the accompanying musical score?.

Entertaining. I really expected more from Chaka Khan and Keo Motsepe. She smiled, posed and moved her hips in time with the music, but her technique in the cha-cha was non-existent. But the entertainer of the night — in keeping the audience wondering what he was going to do next but not necessarily in dancing — was Gary Busey, from whom partner Anna Trebunskaya did her best to cajole a few steps. I’m glad Anna has returned to DWTS after a few seasons, but I’m not sure Gary was a reward. It will certainly be interesting to see what the future holds for both of these couples.

Doda died Nov. 9 of lung and kidney failure at 78. Her services are today in San Francisco. Though a Bay Area celebrity, Doda apparently never claimed her Vallejo roots, though born in Aug. 29, 1937 to Elmer and Doris Doda, according to an Associated Press account forwarded to Vallejo High School historian Harry Diavatis by Vallejo historian Brendan Riley. “Carol was a very private person, so it’s been difficult trying to get enough info on her,” said Diavatis. Doda’s ninth and 10th grade photo is included in the Vallejo Junior High School 1953 yearbook.
